PURPOSE:To enable high accurate pilot injection to be performed, by providing a free piston mechanism communicating with a high pressure chamber of a fuel injection pump and controlling action of a free piston of said free piston mechanism by a solenoid operated unit synchronously with a delivery stroke of the fuel injection pump. CONSTITUTION:A plunger 48 performs reciprocating motion and rotary motion in accordance with rotation of a pump driving shaft 41, and a fuel injection pump 5 inducts fuel into a high pressure chamber 56 to be pressurized thereafter distributively supplied to each fuel injection value via a passage or the like in the plunger 48 by its action. Here the fuel injection pump is equipped with a free piston mechanism 80 for variably controlling the volume of the high pressure chamber 56. This free piston mechanism 80 is constituted of a free piston 82 fitting it into a cylinder 81 communicating with the high pressure chamber 56, and action of said piston 82 is restricted by a solenoid operated unit 70. And the solenoid operated unit 70 controls its electrifying timing by a control circuit 2 synchronously with a delivery stroke of the injection pump, in this way, a pilot injection quantity is adjusted.
