PURPOSE:To obtain a novel wax, having a narrow molecular weight distribution and composition distribution, slight surface stickiness and low melting point and softening point and useful as a pigment dispersing agent, etc., by copolymerizing ethylene with an alpha-olefin in the presence of a specific catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Ethylene is copolymerized with a 3-20C alpha-olefin in the presence of a catalyst consisting of a zirconium hydride compound containing a group having conjugated pi electrons as a ligand and aluminoxane to produce a novel wax with 85-99mol% content of ethylene component and 1-15mol% content of alpha-olefine component having properties of 0.02-0.5dl/g intrinsic viscosity [eta]measured in decalin at 135 deg.C, <=2.5mol.wt. distribution (Mw/Mn) measured by gel permeation chromatography and 5-85% crystallinity measured by X-ray diffractometry and B value within 1.00<=B<=2 range, etc.
