In an ink jet printer, to produce dots on a recording medium ink droplets are ejected from nozzles of a print head located opposite the recording medium. In order to be able to use conventional wood-free paper, films, such as are used for overhead projectors, or other material as the recording medium without the droplets smearing on the recording medium, the invention provides a drying device which heats the recording medium in such a way that the heat still remains in the recording medium for a certain time even after the ejected ink droplets have impacted on the recording medium. The ink droplets on the recording medium which have swollen in a ball shape due to their surface tension are dried in this state and can subsequently no longer become smeared.
