PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance useful as an intermediate for organic compounds of dyes and optical disks, etc., in high yield, by oxidizing guaiazulene or sodium sulfonate-substituted guaiazulene using a strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst. CONSTITUTION:Guaiazulene or sodium sulfonate-substituted guaiazulene as a raw material compound is reacted in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin as a catalyst in the presence of absence of a solvent to afford the aimed compound. For the reaction in the presence of the solvent, e.g. methanol, ethyl acetate, etc., may be used. The reaction temperature is 0 deg.C - the refluxing temperature, preferably 0-50 deg.C. Dowex 50X2, etc., may be used as the catalyst and the amount thereof to be used is 0.5-5 times, preferably 1-2 times based on the raw material compound. |
