In the case of an overheating safeguard for heating devices, in particular for additional fuel-fed heating devices in motor vehicles, having a temperature-dependent sensor element which projects into the chamber to be monitored of the heating device and which switches the heating device off when the chamber temperature exceeds a predetermined limit temperature, the sensor element according to the invention is a ferromagnet, the Curie temperature of which is approximately the same as the limit temperature. Furthermore, a component is present which is made of magnetically hard or soft material, is attracted by the ferromagnet below the Curie temperature counter to the force of a spring and is connected to the switching means for switching the heating device in such a manner that the heating device is switched on in the attracted state of the component made of magnetically hard or soft material. The invention has the purpose of providing an overheating safeguard which is simple in structure, is robust and, even over long periods of time, has a reliable switching function.
