A process is described for the production of chlorine, hydrogen and alkali metal hydroxide, in which an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution in various cell types of a hybrid combination is simultaneously decomposed electrolytically. The novel process involves simultaneous parallel operation of a mercury cell and a membrane cell having an ion exchanger membrane, supplying both cells with purified alkali metal chloride brine from a common brine vessel, and employing a cathode having an activated surface in the membrane cell.
