PURPOSE:To obtain pyridine from a toluene fraction and picoline from a xylene fraction, by neutralizing an ammonium sulfate mother liquor obtained by washing coke oven gas with sulfuric acid with ammonia, bringing the neutralization product into contact with an extraction solvent and distilling the extraction solvent. CONSTITUTION:An ammonium sulfate mother liquor obtained by washing coke oven gas with sulfuric acid is neutralized with ammonia (to about 8.5pH) to return a pyridine base in the form of a sulfate to the form of a free base. The resultant neutralization product is then brought into contact with an extraction solvent containing xylene and toluene. The extraction solvent is then distilled to recover the distilled pyridine and/or picoline from the toluene and/or xylene fraction. Coke oven gas light oil additionally obtained in coke oven plants or tar light oil can be directly used as the extraction solvent. EFFECT:Since the consumption of heat energy can be remarkably reduced, this method is economically advantageous.
