6-Phenoxymethyl-4-hydroxytetrahydropyran-2-ones of the formula I <IMAGE> in which R<1>, R<2>, R<3>, R<4> and R<5> have the meanings indicated, and the corresponding open-chain dihydroxycarboxylic acids, their pharmacologically tolerable salts and esters, processes for the preparation of these compounds, their use as medicaments and pharmaceutical preparations are described. Novel intermediates for the preparation of the compounds of the formula I are additionally described.
