PURPOSE:To form an excellent image in corresponding with the properties of its original image, by making the resolution of an optical system which performs image exposure to an image carrier adjustable. CONSTITUTION:If the images of the very small blue points A and A' of an original 51 are formed on the color separation functioning section, for example, the color separating filter 3 of an image carrier (photosensitive body) by means of an optical system 31, and the light quantity distribution on the color separating filter 3 becomes the one shown by the curve S when the resolution of the optical system 31 is high. If the images of the blue points A and A' are formed on a green filter G or red filter R, no electrostatic latent image is formed and, if formed on blue filters B and B', electrostatic latent images are formed. If the resolution of the optical system 31 is lower than the period of a filter of a specific color, the light quantity distribution on the color separating filter 3 becomes the one shown by the curve S' and an electrostatic latent image is formed in the filter B and B' sections under a shared state regardless of the location of the maximum value of the curve S'.
