PURPOSE:To separate two characters in which the projection in the character string direction is overlapped by eliminating a character pattern part or a region remote from a reference line from a segmentation range based on the left end and width of the character pattern and the value of a described frame pitch. CONSTITUTION:Two written characters 32-1, 32-2 whose projection is overlapped are regarded as one character and its leftmost position 33 and rightmost position 34 are detected. Then the position of smaller distance is used as a reference position. Then a vertical line 36 is taken at a position placed away by a prescribed distance in a direction remote from the center line 35. Searching is applied downward from a point 37 from the written frame 31-1 on the vertical line 36 separated upward by a prescribed distance, a point reaching a black point at first is used as a start point 38, and the cyclic searching is applied while the outer black point of the written character 32-1 is being sought as shown by arrows A-G. For example, after the character 32-1 is erased from a pattern storage memory, the left end 40 of the character 32-2 and the right end 34 are detected, the result is informed to a recognition section of an OCR to complete the segmentation processing. |
