PURPOSE:To prevent declines of operation margin, contrast, and visual angle range when the number of displaying picture elements is increased, by forming scanning electrodes of a photoconductive material and performing light irradiation upon the scanning electrodes at selected positions only for a selected period so as to lower the resistances of the selected electrodes. CONSTITUTION:In order to make an optional intersection of the stripe-like transparent electrodes 12 in the longitudinal direction of a liquid crystal cell 1 and stripe-like photoconductive electrodes 13 in the transversal direction a light transmitting area, a voltage higher than a threshold is applied across the electrodes 12 and 13 forming the intersection and, at the same time, another voltage higher than a threshold is applied across the stripe-like transparent electrodes 14 and 15 of another liquid crystal cell 2 facing the cell 1. As a result, the stripe-like liquid crystal layer area, across which the voltage is applied, becomes to transmit the light of a light source 18 by a guest-host effect and, by means of the transmitted light, only one stripe-like photoconductive electrode 13 facing the area becomes low in resistance and the remaining electrodes 13 remain in a high-resistance state. Therefore, no cross-talk is produced.
