Method is described for the mfr. of briquettes of carbonised vegetable matter using wood, biomass, ligneous derivs. or cellulosic materials as feedstock involves sequential processes of size redn., compression into a heated retort, pyrolysis under pressure, extrusion and cooling in the absence of oxygen. Gases and combustible liqs. evolved during pyrolysis may be collected and burnt to provide heat to the pyrolysis chamber and for pre-drying the feedstock. Claimed appts. includes a cylindrical retort fed with carbonaceous material from a hopper. The feed material is dried and cut up into manageable size pieces before being loaded into the hopper. An archimidean screw is driven by a motor and compresses the material into the retort where its temp. is raised by heating element so that distn. of light organic materials occurs and partial carbonisation occurs. Used in the prodn. of fuel from agricultural residues. |
