PURPOSE:To recognize a character pattern simply with high accuracy independently of an error of the direction of stroke by providing a stroke detection means and a means matching the direction of stroke with the direction of stroke of a standard pattern. CONSTITUTION:The stroke information where the directions of strokes forming the standard pattern of a recognition object category are inputted reversely is registered in standard pattern dictionary 5. Thus, strokes whose direction are inputted reversely in the character pattern hand-written are detected by using the stroke information and the direction of the hand-written strokes which might be inputted reversely is matched to the direction of the stroke of the standard pattern, then the result is used for the collation with the standard pattern dictionary. Thus, the character pattern hand-written is recognized simply, efficiently with high accuracy.
