PURPOSE:To make copying process of a magnetic tape possible without using a main memory and an input-output channel by forming loopback circuit for data transfer in the device, and making copying of data and tape marks and writing of IBG while alternating reading address and writing address in block unit. CONSTITUTION:When a reading controlling section 6 detects that TMK is read instead of copy data in the middle of data copying, the section sends out a TMK detection signal 15 to a TMK copy controlling section 3. The TMK copy controlling section 3 makes logical product of the detection signal 15 and a copy operation signal 14 and sends to a writing controlling section 5 as a TMK write command 16. On receiving the TMK write command, the writing controlling section 5 makes TMK writing process to a writing side magnetic tape device 30-2 through a low-order interface controlling section 7. When this TMK writing process is completed, the writing controlling section 5 sends out a data writing completion signal 17 to an IBG writing controlling section 2. Thereafter, operation similar to the case of data copying is performed.
