PRODUCTION OF ACRYLAMIDE POLYMER

PURPOSE:To decrease the amount of water-insoluble matter formed in a polymer in the superficial part of the polymerization system, by passing steam through the vapor phase in the polymerization vessel during a specified period in the course of polymerization in the formation of a gel-like hydrated polymer by polymerizing an aqueous monomer solution containing acrylamide. CONSTITUTION:A monomer solution containing acrylamide is exposed to an inert gas in a polymerization vessel and polymerized without agitation in the presence of a polymerization initiator to obtain a gel-like hydrated polymer. In this process, the surface of the polymer is heated by passing steam through the vapor phase in the polymerization vessel during a period from the time when the surface of the polymer becomes gel-like to the time when the polymerization is completed in the course of polymerization. The amount of the steam passed is usually controlled so that the temperature in the vapor phase may be kept at about 100 deg.C and the surface of the polymer may be heated. The polymer obtained by this polymerization is divided into fine particles by a usual process and dried to obtain a particulate polymer.
