PURPOSE:To carry out a backing operation with high operability without installing a rail by placing an iron powder truck and backing truck by stretching a wire at the lower part of a groove and by moving them in the welding progressing direction by a chain. CONSTITUTION:A pair of wires 4 is stretched to the lower part of a groove 3 by fitting clamp base 9, 10 to the steel plate 2 of the bridge, etc. putting a reinforcing plate 1 on its lower face. A iron powder truck 5 and backing truck 6 are placed on this wire and moved in the weld line direction by the chain 8 of a moving means 7. In this case, the backing truck 6 closely fits the glassifiber tape 25 of as the backing material to the lower face of the groove with pushing it up by the elastic force of a plate spring 19. A weld bead is formed by the iron powder 27 sprayed by an iron powder spraying device and welding wire 26 in welding but no bead is leaked. The backing can therefore be performed with high operability without installing any rail.
