NEW MATERIAL:2,3,5,6-Tetrafluoro-4-mercaptobenzonitrile USE:Raw material for various pharmaceuticals and agricultural chemicals. It is also useful as a polymeric material and liquid crystal material. The objective product having high purity can be produced from the compound in high yield. PREPARATION:The titled compound can be produced by reacting pentafluoro- benzonitrile with a thiolation agent (e.g. alkali metal hydrogen sulfide) in an alcoholic solvent such as methanol at 0-70 deg.C, preferably 5-60 deg.C for 1-10hr and contacting the reaction mixture with an acidic aqueous solution of 2-6pH to effect the precipiration with acid. The amount of the thiolation agent is >=2mol, preferably 2-4mol per 1mol of pentafluorobenzonitrile.
