PURPOSE:To correctly redisplay an image and to obtain extracted data reduced at its data volume by forming an area detecting means, an contour tracking means, an eight-coupling part detecting means, and a coupling determining means. CONSTITUTION:An original image is converted into multi-value or multi-color digital image by an image input means 1 to form input image data 9 and one contour point in an area is formed by the area detecting means 2. The contour point string is tracked by the contour tracking means 3 by defining the contour point as the starting point, the 8-coupling part in the area is detected by the 8-coupling part detecting means 4 and the tracking direction is determined by the coupling determining means 5 in accordance with the state of picture elements near the 8-coupling part and previously applied priority. Then, the picture element value in the area or the tracked contour point or the like is stored as extracted data 10 by the extracted data storing means 6 and the extracted data 10 are displayed on a CRT display 8 by an extracted data displaying means 7. Consequently, the image can be correctly redisplayed and the data volume of the extracted data can be reduced.
