PURPOSE:In obtaining an alcohol by hydrating an olefin in the presence of an inorganic solid acid catalyst, to obtain the aimed substance in high yield, by carrying out hydration reaction in the presence of a phenol. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining an alcohol by hydrating an olefin (<=12C straight- chain, branched chain or cyclic) in the presence of an inorganic solid acid (mineral acid type, metallic salt type, ion exchanger type or metallic oxide type) catalyst, reaction is carried out in the presence of a phenol. A compound shown by the formula (R<1>-R<5> are H, lower alkyl, phenyl, halogen, OH, carboxyl, nitro, mercapto, etc., or any of two neighboring groups and carbon atoms of benzene ring may form benzene ring) is used as the phenol, the amount of the compound is 0.01-10mol based on 1mol olefin and hydration reaction is carried out by using 1-100mol water based on 1mol olefin at 70-150 deg.C.
