PURPOSE:To obtain the titled substance in high selectivity and in high yield, by using a carboxylic acid and a salt of the carboxylic acid and an inorganic or an organic basic nitrogen-containing compound as a catalyst and carrying out highly concentrated hydration reaction of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide. CONSTITUTION:In obtaining ethylene glycol and/or propylene glycol by hydration reaction of ethylene oxide and/or propylene oxide, a catalyst comprising (A) a carboxylic acid (e.g., acetic acid, etc.,) and (B) a salt (e.g., trimethylamine salt of acetic acid, etc.,) of the carboxylic acid and an inorganic or organic basic nitrogen-containing compound, having a ratio of the components A and B used of especially 100:3-3:100, wherein total amounts of the components A and B is 0.1-50mol% based on ethylene oxide or propylene oxide, is used as the catalyst. |
