PURPOSE:To make it possible to separate only the lowermost original sheet securely with a small-sized, simply-controlled device by making such that when the lowermost originals sheet is separated from the other sheets and transferred by the rotation of an automatic feed roller and the tail end of the sheet is detected, original sheets next to the lowermost and upper are prevented from being transferred. CONSTITUTION:Since coefficients of friction between original sheets themselves 27 mu1, between the original sheet 27 and a separation part 28a of an automatic feed roller 28 mu2, and between the original sheet 27 and a separation plate 29 mu3 are in a relationship of mu2>mu3>mu1, of the original sheets 27a, the lowermost original sheet 27a is separated from the rest of the original sheets and transferred at a constant speed by means of transfer parts 28b and 28c of the automatic feed roller 28. The lowermost original sheet 27a is then transferred, with its front edge held between the automatic feed roller 28 and a feed pinch roller 32. When the front edge is sensed with a front edge detection sensor 33, a reading optical system 34 begins operation to read the image on the lowermost original sheet 27a being sent in, and then the original sheet 27a is discharged via a discharge pinch roller 36 on a tray 37.
