Protection device for mooring and bridge piles which are anchored in the ocean or sea bottom in regions of water with variable water level, against damage caused by ice formation, and comprising a bushing placed around the pile at the height of mean sea level, designed to freeze solid in the ice, and whose height is greater than the anticipated ice thickness, and which can move in relation to the pile. Such a protection device, which is effective, economically attractive, and possible to place on existing piles, is characterized in that the bushing has a smooth, cylindrical, inner surface consisting of a plastic for which ice has relatively low binding capacity, and the bushing has such buoyancy when not frozen solid it floats freely into the upright position around the pile. <IMAGE>
