PURPOSE:To enhance productivity, by equipping a lathe with a headstock sliding in a Z-axis direction, the first tool rest moving in an X1-axis direction and the second tool rest moving in X2-axis and Y-axis directions so that the two tool rests can be used relating to each other. CONSTITUTION:A lathe movably provides the first tool rest 40 in an X1-axis direction while the second tool rest 52 in X2-axis and Y-axis directions. Accordingly, while a tool on the tool rest 40 performs cutting, a tool on the tool rest 52 is selected approaching a work and enabled to perform standby action. While simultaneous cutting by the tools on the both tool rests 40, 52 can be also performed. The lathe, in which only a small number of control axes are required because the both tool rests are controlled only by the three axes, improves also productivity.
