PURPOSE:To attain the control of the states of a recording/reproducing system and to simplify the circuit constitution and the control process of a magnetic recording/ reproducing device, by recording two different signals on a medium with overlap and detecting the recording depth of one of both signals from the erasion factor of the other signal. CONSTITUTION:The signal of 1.5MHz sent from an osicillator 4 is supplied to a head 6 via a switch 3 and an adder 2 and recorded on a tape 7 in a non-input state of the recording signal. This recorded signal is reproduced by a head 8 and the signal of 1.5MHz is extracted by a BPF 13. This extracted signal is stored in a memory 17 by a CPU 16 after wave detection 14 and A/D conversion 15. Then a switch 3 is opened and the luminance signal is recorded with overlap in the recording place of the 1.5MHz signal of the tape 7 via an adder 2 and the head 6. The signal of the tape 7 is reproduced and the 1.5MHz signal is extracted again by the BPF 13 to be stored in a prescribed area of the memory 17 after wave detection 14 and A/D conversion 15. The CPU 16 reads each value out of the memory 17 to obtain the rations among these values and detects the recording depth from the surface of the tape 7 for the luminance signal to convert the detected information into the prescribed control information.
