PURPOSE:To draw a wire electrode and automatically pass the wire electrode through a wire guide and a machining start hole for a workpiece by taking out a rigid rod-shaped substance to an electrode passage from a holder fitted to the side of the electrode passage and connecting the substance to the connection end of the wire electrode. CONSTITUTION:When the tip of a wire electrode 7 has reached a connecting device 24, guided by a guide member 70, a motor M stops, the tip is cut by a wire cut device 60 and a pipe takeout device 23 takes a pipe 21 out of a roller 22. When the motor M has been driven and the connection end of the electrode 7 has entered in the pipe end 21a, the connecting device 24 operates for connecting the electrode 7 to the pipe 21. An actuator 29 operates and clamping by a holding part 28 is released and the motor M is driven for feeding the pipe 21. In this state, a guide member 37 retreats and wire guides 10 and 11 become a guide for the pipe 21. And when the pipe 21 has been fed through a machining start hole 9c, the guide member 37 advances and becomes a guide for the electrode 7, thereby finishing an automatic insertion process.
