PURPOSE:To maintain sample liquid flow at a flow diameter of an adequate size and to improve the accuracy of measurement by adjusting the pressures of the sample liquid and sheath liquid while monitoring the flow diameter of the sample liquid. CONSTITUTION:The data in a memory part 20 is erased and the max. and min. address data obtd. when a specimen particle passes are stored. As a result, the address data Nb, Nc corresponding to both ends (b), (c) of the flow diameter of the sample liquid S are obtd. Nb-Nc is calculated and the flow diameter W is displayed in an arithmetic part 19. These operations are periodically repeated and while the flow diameter W of the sample liquid S is monitored, the pressures of the sample liquid S and sheath liquid C are adjusted.
