PURPOSE:To prevent the plate thickness of a plate type opto-elastic material from being restricted by a rod lens, etc., by forming total reflecting surfaces as wall surfaces of grooves formed in top and reverse surfaces of the opto- elastic material. CONSTITUTION:Light from a light emitting element 4 passes through an optical fiber 5 and the rod lens 6 and linear polarized light having passed through a polarizing plate 7 is incident on the opto-elastic material 1 which is bent to deform with external force 2. Light which is phase-modulated by passing through a compressive stress area formed by the bending deformation is reflected totally twice by wall surfaces of grooves formed in the reverse surface of the material similarly, so that its course is inverted. Therefore, two projection light beams from the material are projected from the right and left opposite positions about the axis of incidence, so they are at a sufficient interval and the plate thickness of the opto-elastic material is not restricted.
