PURPOSE:To improve wear resistance, toughness and filler holding property and to improve repetitive durability by constituting the titled recording medium in such a manner that nonmagnetic powder contains the non-single type zinc oxide powder produced by a French method. CONSTITUTION:The magnetic powder of the magnetic recording medium which has a magnetic layer on one face of a substrate and has a back coat layer contg. a binder and nonmagnetic powder on the other face contains the non- single type zinc oxide powder produced by the French method. The non-single type refers to the co-presence of crystals of various shapes including needle-like, bar-shaped, planar, elliptical and spherical shapes. The average particle size of the non-single type zinc oxide is 0.01-0.8mum, more preferably 0.05-0.5mum. The properties of the back coat layer are thereby improved and the wear resistance, toughness and filler holding property are improved; in addition, the tape deformation and generation of abnormality during repetitive running as well as the fluctuation of properties are obviated. The high repetitive durability is thus obtd.
