PURPOSE:To simplify a recording and reproducing device and to improve reliability and recording density by forming a substrate of such a composite material of which the coefft. of thermal expansion is made nearly zero and providing buffer layers on the substrate. CONSTITUTION:This recording medium is constituted of the substrate 101 which is positioned in the central part of a disk 10, consists of the composite material composed of carbon fibers and general resin compounded at such a ratio as to make the coefft. of thermal expansion zero or nearly zero and is randomly disposed with the reinforcing materials, the buffer layers 102 consisting of resin films provided on such substrate 101, hard underlying film layers 103 formed thereon to reinforce upper magnetic recording film layers 104 and protective film layers 105 to protect the magnetic recording film layers 104. Since the buffer layers 102 are particularly provided on the substrate 101, the micro- thermal expansion distortions generated in the parts of the materials having different thermal expansions are absorbed by the buffer layers 102 and no distortions appear on the surface of the magnetic recording medium. Off track is prevented, by which the reliability is improved and the recording density is increased.
