PURPOSE:To facilitate the area measuring instrument for a plate type processed body by providing sensors capable of moving to and away from processed bodies laterally and longitudinally. CONSTITUTION:A lateral sensor 2 detects whether there is a processed body W or not while moving laterally and sends a processed body detection signal or nondetection signal to a microcomputer (arithmetic unit) 10. Further, a longitu dinal sensor 3 detects whether there is a processed body W or not while moving longitudinally and sends a processed body detection signal or nondetection signal to the arithmetic unit 10. The arithmetic unit 10 calculates the lateral and longitudinal dimensions of the processed body W based on time intervals of signals from the sensors 2 and 3, or the positions of the sensors at the time of signal generation, etc., and calculates the overall surface area of the processed body W based on the calculated values. Thus, the area measuring operation for the plate type processed body is facilitated.
