PURPOSE:To provide a polyester imide containing a specific trimellitimide dicarboxylic acid as a main acid component and hydroquinone and bisphenol as main diol component, moldable by melt molding and having excellent mechanical properties, etc. CONSTITUTION:A polyester imide having an intrinsic viscosity of >=0.4 is produced by melt polycondensation of (A) an acid component composed mainly of trimellitimide dicarboxylic acid of formula I (n is 2-12) and (B) a diol component composed of (B1) 50-95(mol)%, preferably 55-90% hydroquinone of formula II and (B2) 5-50%, preferably 10-40% bisphenol of formula III (X is CH2, O, S, CO, etc.; R is 1-10C alkyl, 6-10C aryl, etc.; m is 0-2).
