摘要 <p>PURPOSE:To obtain a liquid crystal device which has more distinctive EC by arranging a ferroelectric substance on one or both sides as an oriented film. CONSTITUTION:A ferroelectric substrate FE is provided on one or both sides substantially in contact with FLC as an element which determines EC; and ferroelectric liquid crystal FLC 1, oriented films 2 and 2, a couple of light transmissive electrodes 3 and 3', and light transmissive substrates 4 and 4' are provided. Almost all of a voltage applied between the electrodes is applied to the FLC in the beginning of the application and almost all of the voltage is applied to the FE, so that the FLC is placed in an active state in the beginning. Then, when this voltage is applied to the FE and the FE enters a specific inverted or uninverted state, the inverted or uninverted state of the FLC with sufficiently small Ec is determined next according to the inverted or uninverted state of the FE. Consequently, even if the FLC does not have enough Ec, the Ec that the FE itself has is varied, so the FLC follows up the FE of the FE and the FLC appears to have large Ec.</p>
