PURPOSE:To detect the true north speedily at a high speed by using a composite detecting means which detects the acceleration at a stationary position on the ground surface and the rotating speed of the earth each separately on two axes. CONSTITUTION:A composite inertia sensor 10 detects the acceleration at a stationary position on the ground surface and the rotating speed of the earth each separately on the two axes. The sensor 10 is mounted on a swivel table 32 and swiveled by 180 deg. by an inverting mechanism 30. Then, the acceleration and angular speed in the two orthogonal directions which are detected by the sensor 10 are sent out as detected value AX and AY and omegaX and omegaY by a signal processing means 60 to an arithmetic processing means 60. The processing means 60 performs arithmetic operation for determining the true north at the stationary position on the ground surface based on four data AX and AY, and omegaX and omegaY regarding the gravitational force and rotating speed of the earth.
