PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of an overcoat at both ends in the transverse direction of a metallic strip in the stage of continuously electroplating the surfaces of the metallic strip by providing auxiliary electrodes which have the same potential as the potential of the strip and circulate endlessly to both ends in the transverse direction of the metallic strip. CONSTITUTION:The metallic strip 4 as a cathode is continuously moved in the plating liquid in a vertical type electroplating cell 1 by utilizing a sink roll 3 and electricity is conducted between anodes 5 and 6 to electroplate the surfaces of the metallic strip 4. The endless belt-like auxiliary electrodes 8 as the cathode having the same potential as the potential of the metallic strip are circulated by driving rolls 10 and sink rolls 11 in proximity to both ends in the transverse direction of the metallic strip 4 in this case. The electric current concentrated at both ends in the transverse direction of the metallic strip 4 flows to the belt-like auxiliary electrodes 8 and the plating layer are formed on the surfaces thereof; at the same time the overcoat at both ends in the transverse direction of the metallic strip 4 is prevented and the plating layers having a uniform thickness are formed. The plating metal deposited on the belt-like auxiliary electrodes 8 is cut away by knife edges 12.
