This device comprises a guide rail 3 securely fastened to the bodywork of the vehicle, in which a carriage 1 is mounted movably to which the strap return 2 is securely fastened, the said carriage 1 comprising locking means 4, 5 constituted by rollers mounted so as to move transversely with respect to the direction of movement of the carriage in the rail 3, between a position for locking the carriage in the rail, in which the said locking means interact with retention means 8, 9 securely fastened to the rail 3 and a retracted position for moving the carriage in the rail. Actuation means 11 controlled by an operating knob 18 are provided so as to move the said rollers 4, 5 between the said movement position of the carriage in the rail, in which the rollers are retracted in housings 6, 7 of the carriage, and the locking position, in which the rollers interact with the retention means 8, 9 and the rims of the housings 6, 7 so as to lock the carriage and thus the strap return in the rail. <IMAGE>
