PURPOSE:To make it possible to carry out an appropriate defrosting operation of the air conditioner by comparing the preceding defrosting operation continuing time with a predetermined reference defrosting operation continuing time, and varying respective control factors so that the deviation therebetween becomes zero. CONSTITUTION:When an invariable reference defrosting operation continuing time Q which is used as a reference is preset and the preceding defrosting operation is terminated, the preceding defrosting operation continuing time q1 is compared with the time Q to obtain the deviation therebetween. When a judgement q1>Q is positive, the starting temperature T2 and ending temperatures S2 of the succeeding defrosting operation are made slightly higher than he starting temperature T1 and the ending temperature S1 of the preceding defrosting operation, for example, so that the deviation becomes zero. Conversely, when a judgement q1<Q is positive, the starting temperature T2 and ending temperature S2 of the succeeding defrosting operation is slightly lower than the starting temperature T1 and ending temperature S1. Further, when Q1=Q, respective factor groups which have been used during the preceding defrosting operation are used for the succeeding defrosting operation without being varied of values. Thus, said factor groups T, S and P are suitably combined, and are varied so that the deviation becomes zero, that is, respective actual defrosting continuing times become coincident with the reference continuing time Q.
