A pressure relief valve in which a valve element blocking a relief opening is pressed against the sealing seat of this relief opening by means of the armature of an electromagnet with a predetermined force that determines the response threshold pressure is to be designed in such a way that, while being of compact construction, it requires only a relatively small number of parts which can be produced by simple operations and can be assembled easily and in a small number of operations. However, the essential requirement is that it should be possible to set this pressure relief valve easily, simply and reliably and, if required, also post-manufacture in use, to possibly changed specified threshold pressures, on the one hand providing considerable flexibility in the choice of the operating point and, on the other hand, allowing deviations due to tolerances of the individual parts to be compensated for easily, rapidly and reliably. This object is achieved by the fact that the armature of the electromagnet has, in a longitudinal bore, a pin which can be adjusted in its longitudinal direction, is held in a manner which allows it to be fixed and, via a centrically guided tappet, preloads the valve element, so that, by adjusting the pin, the initial air gap formed between the armature and a pole situated opposite to it - the said air gap determining the force exerted by the magnet - can be adjusted easily and in a simple manner to desired force values and hence threshold pressures.
