The invention relates to a process and an apparatus by means of which coating material is melted with the aid of laser beams and is bonded with a surface (17). The object of the invention is to expound a process and an apparatus, with the aid of which thick layers, even of different materials, can be deposited on surfaces (17) rapidly and with strong adhesion. To this end, the beams of at least one laser source (2A, 2B) are combined to a beam forming a reaction zone (6). Within this reaction zone (6) the coating material (8) is heated, melted and vaporised and is then deposited on the surface (17). <IMAGE>
