A method of controlling the combustion of warm unheated top gases, whose calorific value varies considerably, of a hot blast cupola or the like in a combustion chamber which is disposed after the cupola, is supplied with combustion supporting air and has an additional burner, the actual temperature of the flame being measured and controlled to a reference temperature whose value is in turn controlled by the measured temperature of the combustion chamber wall.
