PURPOSE:A sol of metal alkoxide is casted in an electroconductive cylindrical mold and a potential difference is applied between the center and the side surface to effect gelling on the side wall to produce a thin film of tubular glass free from breakage. CONSTITUTION:A cylindrical mold, e.g., made of Al is inserted into a sol solu tion of a metal alkoxide such as silicon ethoxide and a rod of Al is placed on the center of the cylinder. Then, a potential difference is applied between the cylindrical mold and the center rod to form gel on the inside surface of the cylindrical mold (anode) into a tubular gel. The cylindrical mold in which the tubular gel remains is stood in a tightly sealed vessel. Then, the vessel is bored to effect drying to give a dry gel. The dry gel is sintered to give a tubular glass. Thus, a tubular glass of several hundred micron thickness and several milli to centimeter diameter is obtained. |
