PURPOSE:To extract efficiently and simply the information concerning a horizontal or vertical line by scanning a binary picture, measuring the segment length, unifying the segments to combine out of it under the special conditions and making approximate to one segment. CONSTITUTION:A segment measuring part 2 scans the binary picture from a picture memory 1 in the vertical direction or the horizontal direction, measures a segment length and stores it to a memory 3. A conditions judging part 4 selects the segment which is the length in the constant scope, unifies the segments linked in the segment selected in accordance with the conditions of the set segment unification and the segment approximation, the linked segment, when it scans in the vertical direction, is represented to one vertical segment, the segment, when it scans in the horizontal direction, is represented to one horizontal segment, thereby, approximation is executed, the segment information is extracted and outputted. Thus, by specifying the conditions and executing the processing, the segment information can be efficiently and conveniently extracted.
