PURPOSE:To attain the positioning with high accuracy despite the presence of the backlash by driving a machine in the reverse direction to stop it temporarily at a position distant from the target position by a prescribed distance and then driving the machine in the forward direction to position it at the target position. CONSTITUTION:A microcomputer 5 fetches the detection signal of an absolute position detector 1 and obtains the present value of a machine system. If this present value is smaller than the target value, the machine system is driven in the reverse direction and stopped at the position equal to the value obtained by subtracting the low speed width from the sum of the target value and the overshoot amount or at the position equal to said sum. The machine system is driven in the forward direction after the switch and pause and then stopped at the position equal to the sum of the target value, the low speed with and the stop width or at the position equal to the sum of the target value and the stop width. When the value showing said stop position is set within the coincidence width centering on the target value, it is decided that the machine system is positioned at the target position.
