Contaminated liquid, such as lubricating oil, if necessary diluted, is caused to flow down a channel formed by a trapezoidal section groove in a white plastics sample plate (6) which is supported on a stand (2) with the groove sloping downwards in a magnetic field created between pole-pieces (11) on a horse-shoe shaped permanent magnet (10). The liquid sample is supplied to the upper end of the groove by a funnel (15). Any remaining liquid in the groove is gently flushed away with solvent and the deposit left in the groove is visually compared with standard sample plates previously prepared from liquids of known contamination.
|
