The drive shaft of a weaving machine is connected to a driving motor by means of a clutch/brake unit. Before the operation of starting the weaving machine, the speed of the driving motor is increased above the desired operating speed, with the clutch opened. As a result, during the starting operation, the speed of the driving motor does not fall or does not fall too far below the operating speed. A substantial reduction in the time for starting the weaving machine up to the desired operating speed is achieved.
