A flange connection in the case of which the sealing insert (7) (which is inserted into the annular groove) is higher by an amount DELTA h than the height of the annular groove, before assembly of the flanges (2, 3). The amount DELTA h is dimensioned such that, in the case of a flange which is resting on a base body (4) and using its return-springing characteristics, the sealing insert is compressed by an amount which corresponds to a surface pressure of more than 100 Newtons per mm<2>. The volume of each annular groove is dimensioned such that it encloses the insert on all sides, with the aid of the sealing surfaces of the flanges. <IMAGE>
