The invention relates to a switching-spark gap having, inside a gas-filled electrically insulating housing (7), main electrodes (1, 2) which are opposite one another, spaced apart, in a symmetrical design, and having a control electrode (3) which, sheathed by an insulating layer (4), is passed through a central opening (5) in one of the main electrodes (1). It is intended to improve the life and the switching speed of this switching-spark gap. For this purpose, the invention provides that the control electrode (3), which is sheathed by the insulating layer (4), is also covered on its inner end face by the insulating layer (4), so that a corona-discharge zone (6) is formed in the inner region of the central opening (5). The switching-spark gap according to the invention is used especially as a switching element for pulsed CO2-TEA lasers. <IMAGE>
