In the oxidative treatment of steel with oxygen and inert gas in a reactor, the amount of oxygen introduced is so chosen that the oxygen dissolves in the melt but does not form any undesirable oxidation products. Subsequently, flushing with an inert gas is performed, and the charging of the melt with oxygen is repeated.
