PURPOSE:To improve yield of the titled compound useful as a raw material for perfumery, etc., by contacting a styrene compound, carbon monoxide, an alcohol and oxygen using a catalyst consisting of 4 components such as palladium metal, etc., and carrying out the reaction in the presence of carbon dioxide under mild condition. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced by reacting a styrene compound with carbon monoxide, an alcohol and oxygen at room temperature - 200 deg.C, preferably 40-160 deg.C under a reaction pressure of <=500atm, preferably 1-300atm using a catalyst consisting of (1) palladium metal or its compound, (2) a copper or iron compound, (3) a compound of alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or aluminum group metal and (4) a halogen compound in the presence of carbon dioxide. The amount of palladium metal used as the first component of the catalyst is <=0.1g, preferably 5X10<-6>-1X10<-2>g-atom per 1mol of the styrene compound used as a raw material. |
