PURPOSE:The hydrolysis of a silicon alkoxide is followed by addition of carbon tetrachloride to produce a glass including carbon in the silicon network through simple processes. CONSTITUTION:A hydrochloric solution is added to a silicon alkoxide such as tetraethoxy silane as a starting material to effect hydrolysis under stirring. Then, carbon tetrachloride is added to the reaction mixture and the mixture is stirred again. Aqueous ammonia is added to the reaction mixture to adjust its pH to about 0.3-5.0 and stood in a drier to effect dehydrative condensation reaction and drying. The process according to the present invention gives a glass containing carbon atoms in the silicon network. The glass is suitable for use over a wide range of application such as precise filter, carrier or absorbent. |
