In a blood fractionation system, a separation chamber 1 placed in a centrifuge rotor chamber is connected by means of conduits 4, 5, 9 respectively to a blood donor (e.g. via needle 10), a plasma container 7 and a red blood cell container 8. A conduit 11 is adapted to provide communication between the conduits 5 and 9 to return red blood cells to the donor. Pumps 17 and 18 serve to pump donor blood and separated red blood cells along the conduits 9 and 5 respectively. Control means including weight transducers 29, 30 responsive to the amount of plasma and red blood cells in containers 7, 8, red cell and plasma optical transducers 21, 23, ultrasonic transducers 20, 27, 28, and clamps 24, 25, 26 are adapted to operatively interact with the pumps so that blood drawn from the donor is centrifuged, separated blood cells and plasma are alternately converted to their respective containers, and red blood cells are returned to the donor. <IMAGE> |
